OceanPack RACE

The OceanPack-RACE® has been developed since 2009. Following the successful Volvo Ocean Race 2017/2018, the OceanPack-RACE® had been improved rigorously according to the specifications of the sailors and scientists.

The priorities and results were:

  • Energy reduction for the electronics and sea water pump.
  • Size reduction using new materials and smaller components in a complete new constructed frame and mechanical setup.
  • Significant weight reduction due to innovative materials, such as carbon. Optimized water system and new light-weight course filter.
  • External display control panel can be removed during the race for less energy consumption. The system can be fully programmed to time or event activities.
  • The data can be transmitted in real-time via the vessel on-board system or with an optional sat- or radio-transmitter.
  • Highest data quality will be guaranteed by the auto-span gas calibration; resulting in a better quality flag for the SOCAT data base. The new LI-850 gas analyzer is the latest technology to measure low-power carbon dioxide for scientific purpose.

OceanPack™ RACE® 6th generation

The 6th generation OceanPack-RACE® is a highly optimized "Underway" or "FerryBox" system especially for racing yachts. Weight, size and energy-consumption are minimized; Frame and Debubbler made of ultra-light weight and robust Carbon No user operation is needed after system power-on. The pCO2 analyzer and a Thermosalinograph (TSG, CTD) are standard sensors. The pCO2 data can optionally be referenced with standard gas(es), so that qualified data can be recorded in the SOCAT database. Complete system with data supply, data storage, power supplies and optional touch screen.

OceanPack™ RACE® gas calibration unit

Optional automatic gas calibration incl. light-weight reference gas tank for unattended automatic operation. The automatic calibration is needed to fulfil the quality standard requirements of the SOCAT database.

OceanPack™ RACE® external display box

External data display and diagnostic unit. During races the display box is removed to save weight and energy. Function: In-port service, all other automatically controlled

OceanPack™ RACE® GPS receiver

Independent marine GPS receiver, for geo-referencing of data. Optional, the ship navigation data can be used in NMEA-0183 format.

OceanPack™ RACE® Thermosalinograph / CT-Sensor

Compact, high-performance C,T probe is operated as the Thermosalinograph for seawater salinity analysis. The sensor is qualified according WOCE / UNESCO standard.

User statements

"The scientific data … will represent a significant contribution to the already existing observation network. This approach will open the way to the participation of new communities in the observation of our Earth."

Jacqueline Boutin, researcher at LOCEAN (Oceanography and climate Laboratory), and Fabienne Gaillard confirmed.

"Your device is definitely awesome, and I’m absolutely delighted."

Jérôme Chladek, Scientist at Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut, Hamburg.

"The SubCtech technology is exactly the system we were looking for."
