The Dagmar Aaen is once again underway on a major Arctic expedition – and SubCtech is proud to be part of the journey.
On 4 June 2026, Arved Fuchs and his crew departed from Kiel aboard the historic expedition vessel for the latest stage of Ocean Change 2026/27. The route has taken the Dagmar Aaen through the Kiel Canal and via Heligoland, the Orkney Islands, the Faroe Islands and Iceland to Greenland, before continuing into the remote regions of Arctic Canada.
By now, the vessel has reached Canadian waters and is continuing south along the coast of Labrador on the 2026 leg of its journey. Its destination is Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, where the Dagmar Aaen is scheduled to spend the winter before the expedition continues in 2027.
Supporting Arved Fuchs since 2014
For SubCtech, this expedition continues a long-standing partnership: we have been supporting Arved Fuchs and his expeditions since 2014, providing marine monitoring technology for scientific data collection in some of the world’s most remote ocean regions.
For Ocean Change 2026, the Dagmar Aaen is once again equipped with a customized SubCtech OceanPack™.
Due to the unique conditions on board the historic vessel and the very limited installation space available, the system has been specifically adapted and configured for the Dagmar Aaen.
Ahead of the expedition, our team used the time in Kiel to service, install and thoroughly test the OceanPack™, ensuring that it is prepared for months of continuous operation under challenging conditions – including the vessel’s upcoming winter stay in Canada.
Continuous ocean data – even in remote regions
While the Dagmar Aaen is underway, the OceanPack™ continuously measures key parameters in the surface seawater:
- CO₂
- Temperature
- Conductivity
- Salinity
- Oxygen
To maintain a consistently high level of data quality throughout the long-term deployment, the CO₂ measurement is automatically calibrated once every day.
This high degree of automation is particularly important on expeditions such as Ocean Change: the system can operate continuously in the background while the vessel travels through regions where scientific ocean data is otherwise difficult to obtain.
From the Arctic directly to scientists in Kiel
The collected data is transmitted via the vessel’s satellite connection directly to GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, where scientists can review, process and use the measurements for further research.
This turns the Dagmar Aaen into a true “Ship of Opportunity”: while following its expedition route, the vessel simultaneously contributes valuable scientific observations from remote parts of the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean.
